Helio Henriques, Digital Director at ALDI Portugal, is passionate about driving digital strategy, e-commerce, Martech, data analytics, and agile methodologies; he blends technology and innovation to deliver impactful solutions that shape modern customer experience. In an exclusive interview with CIOReview Europe, Helio Henriques shared his views on the digital strategy and transformation in the retail sector.
Pivotal Moments Shaping a Digital Career
I don’t know about my peers, but my path has been anything but straight.
I made a conscious choice back when deciding what degree to take, and between economics and multimedia, indeed, the appeal of technology was bigger, and the better career opportunities influenced the decision, for sure.
“Just make up your own mind and make sure you don’t fall off!”
Since then, the path has been, in fact, bumpy, challenging, but no doubt, enjoyable!
What has kept me close to digital and innovation is the magnitude of the challenges that these fields can present. In Retail, that is even more a certainty. From deploying a seamless ecommerce experience across all digital touch points; making available a CRM that allows multiple stakeholders to operate the connection with customers in a personalized fashion; structuring an up to date but affordable martech stack; building and maintaining a Loyalty program that pretty much affects the entire company; digitalizing the in store shopping experience, merging the physical and online worlds; while pilling up and making sense of the megatons of data that all these projects and programs generate can be exasperating, but for me, they are the kind of stuff I like to mess with.
Data-Driven Personalization in Action
Real-time hyper-personalization should be a mid-tier or large organization’s goal.
If you’re fortunate enough to be part of a company that can leverage the usage of machine learning algorithms to analyze browsing patterns, purchase history, and even seasonal behaviors to predict what customers want before they fully realize it themselves, I believe you’re set to distinguish yourself from the pack. Something like having Professor X’s telepathic abilities, but instead of reading minds, we’re reading shopping patterns and serving up product recommendations.
In retail, predictive analytics for inventory management has been a game-changer for operational efficiency, but even that is now evolving to prescriptive analytics as GenAI contributes to data analysis. If you can synthesize historical data alongside external factors such as weather patterns or social trends, you should be able to forecast demand with significantimprovements.
Personally, I’ve been a fan of what dynamic pricing and promotions can bring to retail. It’s not something easy to deploy if you have hundreds or thousands of locations to address: however, when implemented, leveraging customer segments and competitive intelligence can optimize margins while helping to maintain customer satisfaction.
Closer to CRM, having a customer journey mapped through advanced analytics can help identify friction points and opportunities for improvement across every touchpoint.
Integrating New Tech without Disruption
I’m sure that the majority of organizations face similar challenges, such as data compatibility issues, for instance, when our shiny new analytics platforms need to communicate with systems that predate the iPhone.
A potential approach might be a segregated strategy: Implementing middleware solutions that act as translators between old and new systems;
Rolling out changes in phases rather than attempting a complete overnight transformation;
Investing in change management and training programs, because even the most elegant technical solutions fail if people can’t or won’t use them.
A proper transition management will require constant communication between the stakeholders, setting realistic timelines, and building in redundancies to ensure business continuity.
As GenZers would say about Boomers and late GenXers, respect what they (legacy systems) have accomplished while carefully planning for their transition to retirement.
Seriously, the key is patience, thorough testing in sandbox environments, and always having a rollback plan ready.
Predicting Retail’s Technological Frontier
Inevitably, GenAI and conversational Commerce will lead to a change in personalizing customer experiences at scale. It will take its time, but we’re moving beyond simple chatbots to machines understanding context, predicting needs and even handling complex customer service scenarios, making use of Agentic AI.
Commerce, in its many different fronts, will develop immensely.
SocialCommerce is growing, and players such as YouTube or TikTok are very much aware of that, moving steadily to build their presence in the living room and not just on mobile or desktop anymore.
Connected Television (CTV) is already a certainty, particularly in North America, but I’m sure the medium will have its exponential growth soon, both in Europe and Asia.
Proof of that is the considerable investment that giants such as Amazon or Walmart are making in connecting their Retail Media Networks to third-party partners or keeping all in-house (new walled gardens??). I mean, Prime Video can do just that for Amazon.
Tools that bridge the physical-digital divide should also thrive, even if more slowly, due to the necessary investments instore. Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Try-Ons could assist customers in visualizing products in their space or on themselves before purchasing.
The retailers who succeed will be those who successfully create seamless omni/opti-channel experiences, adapting to a world changing more rapidly than any company can currently keep up with.
Mastering Digital Leadership in Retail
Of course, staying tuned with all that’s new and trendy is key in fields such as digital, technology or innovation. GenAI is here to stay and be part of our personal and professional lives. Having a proper relationship with a data-centric approach to decision making might be helpful or at least won’t hurt, and will help to make you stand out from the crowd. However, I do believe that the best qualities you can present and make use of relate to your personal values.
While my experience and career path had underlined that resilience will always be an important factor in anyone’s career, meaning, you will have to be patient and sometimes even stoic to make sure you stay in line with what you want and believe in, my personal understanding relates more to stubbornness, as my father used to say in multiple occasions so we did not forget: “just make up your own mind and make sure you don’t fall off!”. I still believe that was the best advice I ever got.
