Enhancements to Substance 3D Ecosystem: New Features in Painter and Designer
CIO Review Europe | Monday, October 16, 2023
A new update in Substance 3D brings enhanced 3D painting in Painter 9.0 with path tools, 58 new materials, and Designer improvements like spline nodes and enhanced UX.
FREMONT, CA: A plethora of new releases was introduced to the Substance 3D ecosystem in June 2023, expanding the array of apps and content that empower artists to create using 3D technology. Among these releases is the latest version of Substance 3D Painter, 9.0, which introduces the capability to paint paths and curves directly within the 3D viewport. Functioning akin to a regular brush on paint layers and effects, this feature allows users to construct paths or curves by placing points or vertices. This enables the modification of various parts along a user's path. As a result, individuals utilizing this technology can expect substantial enhancements in 3D painting, whether for product design or game development.
A notable highlight is the new Path tool integrated into Painter, enabling users to create 3D curves on mesh surfaces. This tool facilitates precise detailing for designers and artists, particularly useful for adding intricate elements to 3D models. This attribute offers a familiar and intuitive method for generating paths on 3D models using paint layers and effects. Furthermore, brush properties and path points can be easily adjusted throughout the design process, with paths automatically mirrored using Painter's Symmetry tool.

The latest Painter release introduces nearly 58 innovative materials, replacing the default materials previously used in the application. These base materials are tailor-made for Painter, enhancing the overall quality and broadening possibilities for parametric customization. This enhancement ensures optimal results across various skill levels and project types. Notably, materials from previous Painter versions remain accessible through Substance 3D Community Assets.
The innovative approach of the Designer has been revamped with several improvements, including enhanced spline structuring, portals, and home screens. The addition of various Spline nodes within Designer empowers users to edit and assemble precise curved lines as part of the material creation process. This eliminates the need to subject base shapes to 2D transforms and warps, allowing for specific profiles and a wide range of possibilities. For instance, this technology facilitates the creation of detailed elements like pipes and cables by mapping curves onto a path. Additionally, depth data can be used to twist curves around each other and scatter additional shapes along the curve. The Spline nodes offer precise control over curve shapes through a set of points, allowing for easy edits when necessary.
Leveraging Dot nodes aids in concealing connections in graphs, similar to inputs and outputs passing through portals. A significant user experience enhancement, considered the most substantial to date, provides the option to enable improved comprehension of graphs. Users, stakeholders, and long-time Designer users gain access to a new home screen, enabling swift graph creation, viewing recently opened files, and accessing a Learn section for informative links.
