FREMONT CA,: Humanoid robots are poised to enter homes and workplaces, with the first generation slated for release by 2025. However, their introduction will be limited, primarily relying on remote human control during their initial deployment. At the recent Humanoids Summit held at the Computer History Museum in California, discussions centered on the evolution of humanoid robotics and artificial intelligence. The event, hosted by Sergey Levine, co-founder of Physical Intelligence, highlighted the growing potential for robots to assist in everyday tasks. Despite technical advancements, such as instructing a robot to "Put the eggplant in the pot," the journey to fully autonomous humanoid robots remains challenging.

The first humanoid robot introduced to the public, Neo from 1X Technologies, is expected to debut in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2025. Contrary to expectations, Neo will not initially operate autonomously. Instead, it will be teleoperated, meaning a human operator will remotely control the robot for specific tasks such as navigation, object handling, and basic household chores.
Jorge Milburn, VP of Sales at 1X Technologies, explained that Neo's early deployments will be closely supervised. For safety reasons, the robot will avoid households with young children. Standing 5'4" and weighing 66 pounds, Neo’s compact design and limited 4-hour battery life still present potential risks if the robot malfunctions or falls. Neo can autonomously handle basic tasks like navigation and object placement, while human operators oversee more complex actions. The long-term goal is to minimize remote control as the system learns.
Learning Through Data Collection
Neo’s release is part of a broader trend in robotics, where humanoid robots will begin collecting critical data from residential environments. Much like autonomous vehicles, robots in homes will initially require human oversight to navigate and perform tasks. This supervised learning process will help engineers gather the diverse data necessary for developing future, fully autonomous versions.

This multimodal approach has shown promise in tasks like folding laundry and assembling boxes, though human workers still outperform robots in speed and efficiency.
