CIO Review Europe | Thursday, October 27, 2022
The UK’s tech community has welcomed the appointment of Rishi Sunak as prime minister, with the former chancellor receiving a particularly warm reception from the fintech sector.
FREMONT, CA: The UK's IT community has praised Rishi Sunak's selection as prime minister, with the fintech industry giving him an especially warm welcome. Following Liz Truss' resignation last Thursday, Sunak, the first British Asian to hold the position, was sworn in as prime minister on Tuesday. A comparable tech in-tray awaits the UK's 57th prime minister as it did for Truss, who served in the position for 49 days.
Developing a UK semiconductor strategy, regulating cryptocurrencies, and the Online Safety Bill are some of these problems. However, in the immediate term, the IT sector is looking for stability after weeks of market unrest brought on by Truss's divisive mini-budget. The UK's tech sector has responded so far with guarded optimism.

According to Stephen Kelly, chair of the entrepreneur network Tech Nation states that as they welcome Rishi Sunak's arrival to Number 10, they look forward to the continuation of his pledge to make the UK a science and technology superpower and to ensure a strong pipeline of government backing is available to the most exciting and fastest-growing scaleup businesses as the engine room of growth, exports, and employment for the UK.
Rishi Sunak comes from a history in IT and investment. His tenure as chancellor established his credentials as an ambassador for the business, said Russ Shaw CBE, founder of Tech London Advocates and Global Tech Advocates, in support of this. Shaw cited the Euro 1.4 billion Global Britain Investment Fund and Future Fund, which was established to aid UK companies experiencing financial difficulties due to the pandemic. Shaw noted that Sunak had previously backed The Kalifa Review of UK FinTech and promoted fintech, cleantech, and cryptocurrency.

Sunak’s Crypto and Fintech Record
Sunak stated that during his tenure as PM, he wants to turn the UK into a global hub for crypto assets and requested that the Royal Mint produce a non-fungible token (NFT). This, however, has not yet materialised. According to Charley Cooper, managing director of blockchain enterprise company R3, political unrest could harm the nation's chances of developing into a centre for the cryptocurrency industry.
Many financial organisations are aware of the possibilities of blockchain and distributed ledger technology. These enterprises are more likely to take the next step of integrating these fundamental breakthroughs into their services and business models the sooner the UK's political landscape stabilises, says the report. Sunak has spoken at fintech conferences and advocated for the industry while chancellor. Innovate Finance, a group representing the fintech sector, congratulated Sunak on behalf of its members and expressed excitement about collaborating with him.
He commissioned the Kalifa Review, spoke to IFGS, and pledged to make the UK the finest country in the world to launch and expand a cryptocurrency business. The incoming prime minister would be a good development for the fintech industry and referred to Sunak's attendance at Fintech Week the previous year.
At the event, Sunak discussed the FCA's Scalebox ambitions in light of the Kalifa Review and expressed support for an industry-led Centre for Finance, Innovation, and Technology. The industry needs strong, stable leadership that helps the UK secure its position as a world-class fintech powerhouse. A slowdown in investment threatens to hinder fintech innovation in the UK.
James Lynn, the co-founder of travel debit card company Currensea, said that recent Innovate Finance statistics show that despite the potential of a slowdown in investment, UK fintech investment was up 24 per cent during the first of the year compared to 2021. According to Lynn, the prime minister's continuous support for fintech will be essential in fostering greater innovation in our world-class financial services business, ensuring the sector continues to prosper and maintains its place as one of the leading fintech centres globally.
Market Stability will be a Priority
Sunak will need to boost economic confidence in Britain independent of fintech. The CEO and creator of medical device manufacturer NuroKor Bioelectronics, Rick Rowan, stated that the following prime minister must put political infighting ahead of the interests of British families and businesses. The nation, according to Rowan, desperately needs a leader with the power and experience to develop and implement prudent, thoroughly costed programs intended to rebalance the economy and stop further anarchy.
Market stability will take precedence. According to Andrew Megson, CEO of My Pension Expert, Sunak's first leadership campaign was based on a promise of fiscally conservative measures, which has already satisfied the markets and given the pound a lift. However, Megson continued that Sunak must concentrate on providing prompt assistance to the British people and reiterate his views on rules like the triple lock or welfare reduction."
Privacy is another issue that the prime minister needs to address, according to Colin Hayhurst, the CEO of UK-based search engine Mojeek.
For the sake of economics and security, they must distinguish from and defend themselves against the US and China surveillance economies. Should be aware of the external control that comes with foreign investment and support those who work to maintain the independence of UK businesses.
The financial community was upbeat about an ex-investment banker acquiring the keys to Downing Street. IQ Capital expressed excitement about collaborating with Sunak to develop the UK's deep tech industry and innovation economy.
According to Kerry Baldwin, co-founder and managing partner of IQ Capital, Rishi Sunak's appointment as prime minister improves the chance for the entire venture capital ecosystem to build on the positive growth of previous years and continue powering the innovations of the future.
