xAI’s Colossus: A Million-GPU Vision
xAI, led by prominent tech entrepreneurs, has revealed plans to expand its Colossus AI supercomputer from an impressive 100,000 GPUs to a staggering one million. This ambitious project, with an estimated investment of $27–$36 billion, will also require a power generation capacity of 1.2–1.5 gigawatts—comparable to the output of a large nuclear power plant.
The logistical challenges of such a monumental undertaking, from sourcing GPUs to constructing advanced cooling systems and infrastructure, are immense. Yet, xAI’s ambitious vision aligns with the broader aspirations of other tech giants.
Meta’s Louisiana Megaproject
Meta recently announced a $10 billion data center campus in Richland Parish, Louisiana. Spanning 4 million square feet, the facility’s first phase will accommodate up to 600,000 GPUs. To meet its enormous energy requirements, Meta has partnered with Entergy to build gas turbines capable of generating over 2.2 gigawatts of power.
