The rapid increase in IoT devices, predicted to surpass 41 billion by 2025, has created a vast attack surface, making it challenging for security companies to keep pace. Consequently, cyberattacks have increased significantly, prompting concerns about IoT security among manufacturers and companies. Research indicates that the majority lack well-defined IoT strategies, and many lack security policies for vendors or IoT partners.
Targeted Ransomware Attacks
Targeted ransomware is malicious software demanding monetary value, often a cryptocurrency, in exchange for victim data. Daily ransomware attacks surpass 4,000, making it the leading malware type. A ransomware attack occurs approximately every 11 seconds. Notably, the largest payout was $40 million, with an average ransom fee of $200,000. Experts anticipate a surge in such attacks, driven by remote work trends and potential damages exceeding $20 billion.
Evolution of Multi-Factor Authentication
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a security process where users provide multiple identity verifications for access to digital platforms. The MFA market is projected to reach $28 billion by 2026. While MFA is generally secure, Microsoft and experts advise against SMS and voice authentication due to heightened security risks, particularly "man-in-the-middle" attacks. Online banking, reliant on SMS verification, is particularly vulnerable. Cybersecurity experts recommend hardware security keys for verification whenever feasible to enhance security. The average data breach costs exceed $3.5 million, underscoring the need for robust cloud security management. A cloud security report reveals that 68 per cent of companies identify asset misconfigurations as significant cloud security risks, with 75 per cent expressing concerns about cloud security. Additionally, cloud-based cyberattacks surged by almost 630 per cent from January to April of the previous year, and around 20 per cent of data breaches in organisations were linked to remote workers using company cloud platforms.
Combating remote Work Vulnerability
Pre-pandemic, only seven per cent of private-sector employees had remote work options. Upwork's report predicts a substantial increase, with over 35 million Americans expected to work remotely by 2025, marking an 87 per cent surge. The spike in remote work has intensified cybersecurity risks, with a 238 per cent increase in global cyberattacks reported by HP since the pandemic's onset. Implementing identity and access management (IAM) tools can significantly mitigate these risks by analysing user activity, streamlining secure login processes, and requesting additional authentication as needed.
Investment in Real-Time Data Monitoring
Real-time data monitoring involves the continuous updating of data streams to safeguard an organisation's IT environment, particularly in the context of cloud-based technology and cybersecurity. This approach enables swift responses to data breaches, reducing financial risks, and allows organisations to track and analyse data patterns over time, identifying anomalies, a method known as "trend monitoring."
Notably, up to 70 per cent of data breaches are detected by third-party software, and IDC anticipates a yearly cybersecurity software spending increase of around nine per cent, reaching over $133 billion. Enterprises also allocate more than $21 billion annually to security service providers for 24/7 data monitoring to counter cyber threats.
Social Engineering Attacks
Social Engineering Attacks encompass a broad range of deceptive human interactions. In these schemes, perpetrators manipulate individuals into divulging sensitive information, exposing them to financial risks. These attacks are particularly insidious because they exploit human fallibility rather than exploiting vulnerabilities in software or security systems. Consequently, they are less predictable than technology-based cyberattacks and present a distinct pathway for potential data breaches. Social engineering manifests in various forms and can target any context involving human connections.
Increased Demand for Cyber Security Professionals
The soaring demand for cybersecurity professionals is a common thread across the previously discussed trends, backed by compelling statistics. The Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates a remarkable 30 per cent growth in the cybersecurity industry over the next decade, marking it the fastest-growing sector in the US.
Concerns over a cybersecurity skills gap persist, with approximately 60 per cent expecting the situation to worsen. With this demand comes high earning potential, with Information Security Analysts earning an average of over $100,000 annually, while cybersecurity engineers command salaries ranging from $120,000 to $200,000 per year. Given the projected global cybersecurity losses exceeding $6 trillion by the end of 2021, it's evident why this field is increasingly lucrative for those who maintain relevance.
