CIO Review Europe | Friday, March 26, 2021

The construction sector uses augmented and virtual reality to improve the quality of the projects and the employees' safety.

FREMONT, CA: The construction industry has benefited from the deployment of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), starting from the conceptualization of the project to its completion.

When compared to other industries, the construction industry has been slow to embrace technology. On the other hand, construction companies have recognized the potential of digital technologies like AR and VR and have begun incorporating them into their projects. AR and VR applications in construction help companies save money and offer a better experience for their clients.

Advantages of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in Construction

Here are some of the advantages of AR and VR in the construction industry:

Effective Planning

Construction firms need various teams to complete a project, and timely and effective communication is critical to achieving the project on time. AR and VR would help to bridge the communication gap between project participants. Site data documented by site supervisors or engineers may be sent to the design team for clarity or if a problem arises. The construction manager or contractor may use augmented reality to do a virtual walk-through of a location utilizing a Building Information Model overlay on top of the physical model to determine and compare modifications, if any and review project documentation. Any conflict that occurs can be resolved quickly, saving time, labour, and money.

Improving Safety Standards

In terms of total worker deaths across all industries, the building industry takes the lead. In 2017, 971 people died, accounting for 20.8 percent of all private-sector deaths. Augmented reality and virtual reality in construction will vastly enhance safety standards on the job site. These systems can be used to raise awareness of on-site conditions, preventing employees or managers from being exposed to danger. A construction site is often littered with left unattended materials, posing a risk to workers' safety.

Immersive Experience

The construction industry's sales process will be transformed using AR and VR. AR and VR will provide consumers with an immersive experience while also assisting with a business marketing and sales. Using AR and VR technologies, construction companies can provide a fully furnished 3D model of the apartment to the clients. During the construction process, augmented reality will provide an overlay of the furnished apartment.
