What's New in the Smart City Landscape?

CIO Review Europe | Friday, August 27, 2021

Apart from applying the simplified principle of Device-Pipe-Cloud-Application, the critical technical component of the smart city of the future must be Artificial Intelligence.

FREMONT, CA: The temptation of increasing income, employment, opportunity, education, and entertainment has drawn more than half of the world's population towards the cities. City planners and entrepreneurs have encouraged this by providing inhabitants with vital services and industries, increasing urbanization.

As a result, sustainable development objectives, improved zoning, smart density, and innovative technology have been implemented to meet the changing demands of citizens. The beginning of a 'black swan' pandemic crisis has highlighted the quality of governance, the range of inequality, and cities' ability to respond to unanticipated events instantly.

Information and situational awareness must be easily accessible from all relevant sources in near real-time to make educated decisions as part of the digital transformation of city services. The idea of 'Device – Pipe – Cloud – Application' would guide the digital transformation of a smart city today. Devices gather data, and the pipe transports it to the cloud. It is stored, categorized, and cross-correlated before being made available for processing by applications for visualization to make rational decisions.

Why the cloud is essential to a booming smart city

Several current systems per department that cater to their particular services exist in cities, and these can be moved to the cloud in steps. The infrastructure would be upgraded in the first phase to allow device connectivity and information exchange across government agencies. The second stage will develop a shared digital platform in a hybrid cloud format that can accommodate both personal and public requirements.

Sharing information, sharing resources, load balancing, greater availability, cloud computing, single monitoring and maintenance operations, elastic scalability, and lower total cost of operations are just a few advantages of a cloud environment.

Additionally, one of the most powerful features is the capacity to enhance the quality and productivity of paperless services by integrating process automation, mainly automated services augmented with artificial intelligence (AI).

People can enable intelligent interaction of devices, intelligent redundant and self-healing connectivity, data feeding to a smart cloud hub for data processing and offer an intelligent twin for a new beginning of smart city evolution by connecting AI to the 'Device-Pipe-Cloud-Application' model at every stage.
